I learned a lot through this course and will be going back to the sites again and again. Thank you for giving us something that we can really use in our libraries.

You can tell that something has been modified by looking at the credits and acknowledgements. Copyright is an area that is very difficult and being diligent about use is very important. The music and movie industry is struggling with it as well as many other artists and creative people and industries. The Creative Commons site was very informative and interesting.

I have used eBooks quite a lot. Through POWER Library we have access to netLibrary and I have found it very useful for patrons and myself. It is great to have access to resources that, with a limited budget, I could never afford to have available to students and faculty. I have also used Gutenberg and it is a great, FREE resource. When I think back to when I was in high school and college and compare it to all the resources available now, it is truly amazing.

Podcasts are blocked where I work and I cannot access from home so this exercise was a little more difficult to do. I read about podcasts and I think they would be useful to update students about school events and activities going on. I think at some point the blocking in our location will have to be looked at because this technology isn't coming, it is here.

I chose this video because, again, I love Jane Austen and I like this version of Persuasion very much.

The thing that I don't like about YouTube is all of the junk and inappropriate stuff that we have to be careful of in schools. You cannot turn students loose. It has to be very supervised by the teacher. I think having various presentations, how to use instructions, author talks or interviews, etc would be a good addition to library web sites. It also is easy to use which is always a good thing (Thing 15) and increases the use of anything in general.

I found several discussions about Jane Austen novels and books that have Jane Austen references and other books to read if you like Jane Austen. I was interested in all of them.

This would be great to use with a reading club or elective English class on popular fiction

and a lot of other categories/groupings. I will go back to this source. I really liked it.

This would be a good tool to use for teachers to share ideas concerning Classrooms for the Future (CFF). Teachers could share their successes and failures, ideas that worked, activities that students enjoyed, resources, web sites, etc. Instead of starting from scratch each time and re-inventing the wheel, it would be a great resource for sharing and collaborating and encouraging each other and seeing what everyone is doing in their classroom.

I added a post to PA Curriculum Connections under the Wiki for PA Librarians. This is a resource I will come back to again. There is almost too much information.

You would have to be very careful since people can change things that others have written. Even with a notification of changes it would be time consuming to go back and check all of that. It would be a good way for curriculum committees and other types of school groups to communicate without needing to get together. It would save travel time and money on gas. It would be a good way in addition to email for staff and administration to keep in contact over summer and otheroff time.

Thing 16 - Wikis

My first introduction to wikis was Wikipedia. I don't think it is a good resource for research but when taken with a grain of salt is a good site just for background information and to become familiar with a topic and then go to an authoritative source for research. In looking through the information for the activity, one thing I would do for a site of my own is to restrict it and have users register and get approval from me before they had access to make changes. It is a good way to network and discuss issues with people from other areas. As far a a school application, I could see some that would work well for me and teachers. I could use wikis for various types of book lists for students and staff, summer reading lists, book clubs, student book reviews and recommendations, new books and various genre lists. Teachers could use wikis to enable students to report on their part of a larger research project. As an example, Native American tribes where each student or small groups reasearch a tribe and add to the larger pool. It is something that will continue to grow and change and we will find many applications for the use of wikis.

Some thoughts on Library 2.0.......

• It will change how library schools train future librarians.
• Public and school librarians will be learning and training at an even faster pace than before. They will have to try to keep up with technology and the needs of patrons.
• Younger patrons will want their information delivered in Library 2.0 ways. They will want their information available to them at home, work, commuting, school, etc.
• Patrons will want information to be easy to use and with quick results. No Training Required.
• Libraries of all kinds have experience a drop often dramatic in their circulation statistics. Budgets will be adjusted because of this trend and changes made to how and where money is spent.
• Terminology has changed! eBooks, digital resources, virtual graphics, avatars, virtual reality, 3D graphics, augmented reality, WiFi, wireless, IM, wikis, blogs, etc.

My doctor and I were discussing the changes. He said that doctors are facing some of the same things. Instead of a print patient file, doctors will access them via their laptop. Doctors have to learn how to function with the new technologies. Many careers are facing the same changes.

This resource has a lot of things to learn and explore. It could be very time consuming to really explore it. It would be a time saver in locating blogs and cut down on a lot of hunting and searching. In our school, blogs are blocked but I know it will be an issue in the near future on how to use and deal with these issues from a technology person and department standpoint.

I can see this as a great tool. Students want to go online and this would be a way of limiting them to good sites. I would want to have separate bookmark lists for school use and personal use. I set up my own account so I can use it at home and add to it and also be able to access my personal bookmarks from anywhere. I will explore and use this often I think.

This was very interesting to look at. It would be very useful in setting up selected websites for a class to use for research. They would be able to acces this list from home or school to work on their assignment. These could be saved from year to year and added to, etc.

I checked out Biblio.com. I think this would be very useful to assist in replacing out of print books and books that have been lost or damaged. Often this is a difficult task and this resource looks like it makes is simple and easy and all in one place for fast results.

I also browsed picnik which is a resource to assist with photo editing online. This would be useful in the personal sense for scrapbooking and sharing photos with family and friends online. It also would be useful in a library in putting together online displays on web pages. It was easy to use and seemed quick to learn and "get the knack of".

Thing 10 - Image Generator

One of the image generators that I tried was a Billboard Maker on Flickr Toys. I also tried Random Photo Browser and Slide Show as well as Warholizer which was fun. This would be a real time saver. All you would see is new information in your area(s) of interest. I can see this being used in an economics class. Each day they could look at the new information of that day and see how the markets are reacting and the commodities. Students in world culture classes could tract the news of the day for a specific country or world region.

Thing 7 - Technology Interest

My daughter had her digital camera with her while we were on vacation in Rocky Mountain National Park this summer. She was able to post pictures to her Facebook account as well as print them out on her photo printer and put them in her album that she bought in the park. It turned out really nice. Digital cameras make sharing your photos so easy and the ability to select the ones you want and print them out in the size that you want is great.

used as a fun way for students to report on
authors, historical figures, scientists, etc.

Thing 4 - BLOG
My daughter and I recently drove from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles. We stopped to see the Hoover Dam and the water was so blue. It was beautiful. I wish we had seen some bighorn sheep but they were shy that day.

Lifelong Learning

Lifelong learning occurs whether we are prepared for it or not. Bring home a new baby and you learn fast how to do things. This is one example of a situation where even if you don't have experience you are forced to learn. Sometimes we plan to learn such as going back to school to take courses or joining an aerobics class. One area I need to look into exploring is giving back and teaching others outside of my job such as volunteering in my community.
